Pulsara aims to revolutionize communication in the medical field, their app is used by agencies across the United States to breakdown the barriers that so often exist between pre-hospital EMS providers and higher levels of care. In particular, Pulsara wanted this video to highlight their new interoperability with industry-leading Zoll heart monitors, allowing providers in the field to immediately transmit EKG’s to a health system.
Our goal was to have high production values while not losing the authenticity of the medical scenario. Many viewers of the video asked whether it was a real medical call, which was very encouraging that we accomplished this goal. Production was a nimble single operator shoot, using a gimbal for maximum flexibility in confined environments such as in the back of a helicopter. Valuing the real world feel, all shots were completed practically, including timing a helicopter touching down outside the window.
The opening scene was crafted to immediately capture the viewer’s attention by creating questions we’d later answer. The siren slowly begins to cut through the audio mix and we become aware of an EMS crew receiving patient info on a call they’re responding to. This scene also grounds us in the current state of medical communication which is highly dependent on two-way radio systems.
During production, we developed a new visual language for Pulsara videos, using partially transparent overlays of their app. This avoided the need for having to show the app interface on screen through practical elements, and allowed for the interface shown to be updated for years to come without the need for costly re-shoots.
Pulsara responded enthusiastically to the video and premiered it at EMS World expo, the largest EMS-focused event in the United States. We greatly appreciated our partnership with Pulsara on this project, and we’re proud that our local fire department and EMS transport agencies utilize Pulsara.
